Virus Experts Infobase

This is our portal for information related to viruses and all kinds of malware. As this section is pre-alpha quality, we appreciate all suggestions at our site forum.

What is this?

This section will contain information, virus analyses, source code, descriptions, and removal information for more than 130,000 items of malware. You can still find the old list of common viruses, although we are planning to integrate this into our Infobase, once rich-media support is added.

The Virus Experts' VirML (Virus Markup Language) is an XML vocabulary for describing viruses, spyware, and other malware. Unlike existing proprietary formats for malware description, Virus Experts VirML does not define a set of standard categories for malware classification, instead, it focuses on classifying malware by their properties and how the malware interacts with its environment. By abandoning a rigid categorical scheme, VirML allows tighter integration of the virus research, detection, and disinfection process.

Inspired by the virus encyclopedias published by numerous anti-virus software vendors, the Virus Experts Infobase aims to provide a standardized format for describing malware in an open manner. Furthermore, by publishing our own malware encyclopedia, editable by the community (much like a wiki, in the spirit of Wikipedia), we aim to create a massive resource for virus researchers around the globe.

How will it look?

We will be needing some volunteers to help us rewrite a lot of the outdated virus descriptions and associated metadata. You can find a rough-draft of an Infobase by viewing the entry for the Suicide virus.

TODO

  • convert all 113,505 XML files from ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8, although this could happen when the docs are inserted into an XML database
  • finalize XML Schema (XSD) for malware specimens
  • collaborative editing of Infobase entries (Wiki-like)
  • support upload of media (screenshots, sourec code, virus samples) that would be associated with a specific virus
